In an article published in Huffington Post, titled “I Underwent Cosmetic Surgery for My Body Dysmorphia… And I Wish I Hadn’t”, the 33-year-old shared his horrific body dysmorphic disorder and plastic surgery addiction.

Battle With Body Dysmorphia And Negligence Of His Plastic Surgeons
Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a type of mental illness that makes one believe that some aspect of their body or appearance is severely flawed.
The illness can lead its host to go to any extent to “fix” their look.
According to Wikipedia, anti-depressant medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), are considered effective.
Likewise, Zeke and Luther star Ewing also revealed that his looks were the only thing that mattered to him.
He was obsessed with his looks and would spend hours looking at the mirror and criticizing his body parts.

The actor/musician had just moved to LA to become an actor. He did not have any friends and his mental illness took a toll on him, and he decided to go for cosmetic surgery.
“No one is allowed to be this ugly,” Reid remembered thinking about himself before going for his first surgery. A long and tiring process he was about to begin which would change his life forever.
Good Luck Charlie star also called out his doctors on his op-ed for letting him have that many surgeries.
He revealed that since he was unaware of his mental illness, he had no idea about having cosmetic surgery addiction; however, none of his doctors seemed to care.
The actor stated:
“Of the four doctors who worked on me, not one had mental health screenings in place for their patients, except for asking if I had a history of depression, which I said I did, and that was that. None of the doctors suggested I consult a psychologist for what was clearly a psychological issue.”
Plastic Surgery Addiction That Ruined His Both Personal And Professional Life
Reid Ewing revealed that he had his first surgery in 2008 at the age of 19. He remembered thinking one procedure would make him look like Brad Pitt.

He told his doctor of wanting to have cosmetic surgery as he was an actor. His surgeon agreed and told him it would help his career.
As per Ewing, it was a horrific experience. The doctors were unhelpful, and he remembered waking up screaming from pain.
His whole face was swollen, and he could not leave his house for almost two weeks.
The actor was unsatisfied with the outcome and decided to go to another doctor.
He had no idea that it was just a vicious circle that his mental illness forced him to enter.

As per the actor, he has done eight major surgeries on his face, and some of them are:
Cheek Implants-Reid Ewing has cheek implants. It is also called cheek augmentation, which is a process of inserting to enhance cheekbones or make the cheeks fuller.
Silicon cheek implants are typically fixed to your existing bone struture, which means they can last for a lifetime.
The surgery normally costs $3,669, according to 2020 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Jaw Implants-Ewing also did surgery to implant a new jawline to give his chin and jaw a more pronounced look.
The implants are normally made from one’s bone or fat issue and can last for a lifetime. Its average cost is anywhere from anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000.

As per the types of fillers, they can last from 6 to 12 months to 2 to 5 years.

Fat Transfers– The procedure helps remove unwanted, excess fat through liposuction from one area of the body and transfers it to another desired body part.

What Made Him Stop His Surgery Addiction?
The actor/musician Reid Ewing revealed in an interview that even though he had many surgeries over the years, he was never satisfied with his look.
He stated:
“I would get something in attempt to look better and then after it swelled down I would say no no this is the way I look why did I do this and then I would go back to the same doctor and beg them to take it out.”
It was a never-ending cycle: he was stuck between wanting to have a new look and never getting satisfied with the given look.
After many years, in the begining of 2012, the Up All Night star Ewing finally stopped the cycle.
He wrote:
“All the isolation, secrecy, depression, and self-hate became too much to bear. I vowed I would never get cosmetic surgery again”.
The actor continued:
“Even though I was still deeply insecure about my looks. It took me about six months before I was comfortable with people even looking at me.”
Reid also talked about how his addiction hampered his personal and professional life.
He was one of the important characters in the hit show Modern Family, and his obsession affected his work life.
Sometimes the actor would not even leave the house and be absent from work.
Similarly, he mentioned how he invested all his savings for the surgery and would borrow money from his parents and grandparents in desperation.
Ewing finally seems to have found his peace with the way he looks.
Though it was a long and hard journey, he finally reached the destination—a place where he is finally satisfied and happy.

Reid Ewing was born on November 7, 1988, in Florida, the U.S. He started his career in theater productions in the South Florida area.
Similarly, he made his on-screen debut in 2010 in the film The Truth Below.
Ewing is known for his roles in shows like The Truth Below, 10 Rules for Sleeping Around, Up All Night, and Zeke and Luther.
